Family Bat Walk
Willard House and Clock Museum and Mass Audubon are teaming up again to host an evening bat walk on the museum grounds.
On Friday night, September 6th (rain date, September 12th) at 6:30 PM, visitors of all ages can join experts from Mass Audubon to walk the property using bat detectors and in real time, listen to and identify the bats flying overhead. Attendees will get to hang with a guest bat and a chat with a bat biologist before the walkaround the museum grounds.
“Bats are incredible flying mammals. They too, rely on time as they use echolocation to seek out insects as a meal,” says Willard House & Clock Museum Director of Development, Robert Gierschick. “We will have a chance to learn about the world of bats and hear how bat behaviors and better understand how they navigate the museumgrounds.”
The US Department of the Interior states there are over 1400 species of bats, ranging in size from a penny to a small dog and they live on every part of the planet except for polar regions and extreme deserts. According to Mass Audubon, there are nine bat species specific to Massachusetts. “Bats have used the land habitat of the Willard property before it ever was established,” explains Mass Audubon. “We will likely enjoy the ultrasonic calls of an Eastern Red, Hoary or Little Brown bat and their pups (baby bats).”
The event is free and was made possible by the generous donation from the Gaudette Insurance Agency.
