Upton was originally the home of the Nipmuc, who inhabited most of central Massachusetts.  It was settled by Europeans migrants in 1728, and incorporated in 1735

  • Home to Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin
  • The Grafton & Upton Railroad began in 1873 and still operates today.
  • Knowlton Hat Factory was considered the largest hat industry in the world
  • By 1873, Upton’s factories were producing 21.7% of all boots manufactured in Worcester Count
