Jane’s Walk: From the Old State House to the New!

Explore Providence neighborhoods on foot with Jane’s Walk, a global walking festival on May 3-5, inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs. These interactive walks are led by local residents and community activists who get people thinking, talking, and connecting with each other. Jane’s Walks are free and anyone can participate! Wear comfortable shoes, meet your walk leader in the designated meeting spot, and get ready for a lively discussion. Walks take place rain or shine.

  • From the Old State House to the New! May 4th is the date that Rhode Islanders formally renounced their allegiance to King George III. The Act of Renunciation was voted on in the Old State House which sits near what was once a large saltwater cove. We’ll walk from there to the “new” State House which is celebrating its 120th birthday this year. Along the way we can talk about Revolutionary era Rhode Island, the changing landscape, public spaces, parking lots, or whatever the group would like. It’s an open conversation in the heart of our capital city. The walk will conclude inside the State House where visitors can explore the building (which is rarely open on Saturdays) and see the original 1776 Act of Renunciation. Start/end points:  This walk will begin at the Old State House, 150 Benefit Street, however we will meet on the North Main Street side of the building. It will end at the Rhode Island State House, 82 Smith Street. Parking: Limited parking is available in the Providence Preservation Society and Old State House parking lots. Parking is also available in the lots surrounding the State House. Old State House // RIPTA R Line North

We encourage all people to walk, bus, bike, scooter and carpool! Use the Transit app for specific details about your destination.
