Paddle the West River, Upton

An upstream paddle leads to Old Zac, a pond owned by the town of Upton. We will be paddling around obstacles and over beaver dams. Be prepared to encounter and enjoy these as part of the trip.

Meet at 6 p.m. for a 6:15 p.m. launch

Location: For GPS use 100 Pleasant Street, Upton, MA, or 142 Glen Road, Upton, MA

The parking area for this put-in is small and can accommodate no more than eight cars.  In addition, Pleasant Street is a narrow, busy highway with no space for on-street parking.

The unpaved entrance to the put-in has no known street address, but it is easy to locate. It’s just north of the intersection with Glen Road, on the same side of the highway.  Waze gives the address 100 Pleasant Street for the put-in but that is actually the address of the DPW garage 100 yards north, across the highway.  If you see the DPW building on the right, you’ve gone too far.  The Glen Road address in Upton is a better guide.  Enter 142 Glen Road into your GPS but do not turn left into Glen Road.  Drive 50 yards past Glen Road and turn left into the put-in road.

Directions: From Route 146 Northbound (From Rhode Island)  Drive on Route 146 North into Massachusetts. Take Exit 5 for Route 16.  At the end of the ramp, turn right onto Route 116 toward Uxbridge.  At the traffic light in downtown Uxbridge, turn left onto Route 122 North. Follow Route 122 about three miles through Uxbridge into Northbridge. At the traffic light with Burger King on the left, turn right onto Church Street. Go 0.75 mile to the T intersection and turn left onto Quaker Street. Go about 2.5 miles (Quaker Street becomes Pleasant Street)  Look for the Glen Road sign on the left side of the highway. One hundred yards after Glen Road, turn left into the unpaved put-in driveway.  (If you come to a traffic light and the DPW building on the right, you’ve gone too far.

From Route 146 Southbound (Worcester area) In Massachusetts, drive on Route 146 South to Exit 12. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto Central Turnpike. (Central Turnpike will become Sutton Street.)  Go a total of three miles and turn right onto Route 122 South.  Drive two miles on Route 122. At a traffic signal with Burger King on the right, turn left onto Church Street.
